Yulon Woodcarving Heritage

Yulon's Support History for Wood Carving

Since 1992, Yulon Group has been hosting the "Yulon Arts Festival," organizing and sponsoring various types of cultural and arts activities annually, including classical music, improved traditional Chinese opera, and Koji Pottery. The festival revolves around different cultural themes each year, aiming to promote cultural literacy among the public.

In 1995, Yulon Motors implemented “factory and office integration”, relocating important departments to Sanyi such as the Taipei headquarters, Taoyuan Engineering Center, and Xindian Factory. Located in Sanyi, the "Hometown of Wood Sculpture", and with a view to giving back to the hometown and preserving Taiwan's inherent culture, Yulon Motors decided to shift the focus of "Yulon Arts Festival" towards promoting wood carving culture in 1997. Thus, the company initiated the first annual " Yulon Woodcarving Golden Award“, offering substantial prizes annually to reward outstanding wood carving creations. This competition has continued uninterrupted for over a decade, not only being the sole wood carving competition organized by a private enterprise domestically but also offering the highest total monetary award for wood carving in Taiwan.

To encourage traditional wood carving artists to innovate, the "Yulon Woodcarving Golden Award" was renamed the "Yulon Woodcarving Innovation Award" in 2007. The initiative aimed to penetrate into campuses, encouraging students to engage in wood carving creation, nurturing young talents in wood carving, and tirelessly promoting the inheritance of wood carving art. It also showcased the diverse and innovative aspects of Taiwan's wood carving art.

After hosting the wood carving exhibition for many years and acknowledging the separate efforts of enterprises and local governments in promoting Taiwanese wood carving art, which lacked integration of resources, Yulon was decided in 2014 to redirect the funds previously allocated for the annual "Yulon Woodcarving Innovation Award" towards sponsoring the Miaoli County International Cultural and Tourism Bureau annually. This sponsorship aimed to provide long-term and stable support for the bureau's “Taiwan International Wood Sculpture Competition " and various international wood carving exchange activities, enhancing the Sanyi’s international level of wood carving competitions and broadening the scope of international wood carving exchanges.

Yulon Motors established the "Yulon Woodcarving Heritage Award" and the "Yulon Woodcarving Innovation Award" within the "Taiwan International Wood Sculpture Competition”, providing these two awards high bonuses totaling NT$600,000 as rewards.

A seemingly inconspicuous piece of wood, when skillfully carved by a woodcarver, is imbued with new life.

Since 1997, Yulon Motors has been hosting the " Yulon Woodcarving Golden Award " to reward outstanding woodcarving artworks in Taiwan. Each year, a significant amount of manpower and resources are invested, with the monetary award reaching up to 2 million NT dollars. In 2006, coinciding with the 10th edition of the " Yulon Woodcarving Golden Festival“, a documentary was commissioned by the Association of Taiwan Documentary Development to commemorate this milestone. Through visual storytelling, the documentary aimed to make the beauty of woodcarving art more accessible to the public and to raise awareness about the future of Taiwan's woodcarving industry. "Gift from Life “ premiered on December 14, 2006, at the Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum in Miaoli County. The film interviewed several past winners of the Yulon Woodcarving Golden Award to understand the rise and fall of woodcarving art. Due to fierce competition in the international market, with other regions gained price advantages with low labor costs, Taiwan's woodcarving industry faces severe challenges.

Like many artists, woodcarvers spend their lives in pursuit of artistic ideals, constantly honing their craft with carving knives and wood. They glimpse the mysteries of nature through the patterns of wood and find philosophical insights in their woodcarving creations. For woodcarvers, the wood gifted by nature is indeed the most miraculous gift bestowed upon them by the heavens.。
